Waterbed Sizes & Frame Compatibility

Waterbed sizing isn't quite the same as standard mattresses, and getting it right saves you from ordering the wrong sheets or a mattress that doesn't fit your frame. Here's the clear version.

Dimensions vary slightly by manufacturer and era. If you have an existing frame, measure the inside (length × width × depth) and send it to us — we'll confirm the exact fit. Call (877) 474-9196.

Hardside vs softside — different size systems

The most important thing to know: hardside and softside use different sizing.

  • Hardside water mattresses are built to traditional waterbed dimensions and use waterbed-specific sheets.
  • Softside waterbeds are built to standard mattress dimensions and use standard sheets (the same Queen/King sheets you'd buy anywhere).

Typical hardside waterbed sizes

Size Approx. dimensions Notes
Super Single 48" × 84" Narrow; common in older frames
Queen 60" × 84" Longer than a standard queen
King 72" × 84"
California King 72" × 84" Often the same as waterbed King

These need waterbed sheets, not standard bedding.

Typical softside waterbed sizes

Size Approx. dimensions Sheets
Queen 60" × 80" Standard Queen
King 76" × 80" Standard King
California King 72" × 84" Standard Cal King

Softside matches standard mattresses, so normal fitted sheets work.

Fill depth — match the mattress, heater, and frame

Water mattresses come in different fill depths, and this affects the feel, the heater you need, and what fits your frame:

  • Deep fill (≈8–9"): the traditional full-depth feel. Uses a higher-watt heater (e.g., 325W).
  • Mid fill (≈6"): shallower, lighter.
  • Shallow fill: lighter still.
  • Tube / cylinder (≈3.5"): individual cylinders, often in softside and adjustable setups. Uses a lower-watt heater (e.g., 170W) — do not use a deep-fill heater on tubes.

Key rule: the heater wattage must match the fill depth. A deep-fill heater is wrong for a tube bed and vice-versa. Tell us your fill depth and we'll match the heater.

Matching a mattress to your frame

  1. Measure the inside of the frame — length, width, and depth.
  2. Pick the right type — hardside mattress for a wood waterbed frame; softside system if you want standard sizing on a regular base.
  3. Match the fill depth to your frame's depth and your preferred feel.
  4. Match the heater to that fill depth.
  5. Add the essentials — liner, conditioner, fill/drain kit, and the right sheets.

Sheets and accessories

  • Hardside: buy waterbed sheets in your waterbed size.
  • Softside: buy standard sheets in the matching standard size.
  • Both benefit from a mattress pad suited to flotation.

FAQ

Are waterbed sizes the same as regular mattress sizes? Hardside, no — they're their own sizes and need waterbed sheets. Softside, yes — they use standard sizes and standard sheets.

What heater do I need? Match it to fill depth: roughly 325W for 8–9" deep fill, 170W for mid-fill and tubes. Never use a deep-fill heater on tube beds.

Can I put a new mattress in my old frame? Usually yes — measure the inside of the frame and match the size and fill depth. We'll confirm before you buy.

What sheets fit a softside waterbed? Standard fitted sheets in the matching size (Queen, King, Cal King).
