Waterbed Motion Explained: Free-Flow vs Waveless vs Dual
Short answer: "Motion" is how much you feel the water move. It runs from free-flow (the classic, lively wave) to ultra-waveless (you feel supported, barely any movement). More fiber inside the mattress = less motion. If you sleep with a partner who moves a lot, lean toward waveless or a dual bed.
Free-flow = most wave · Semi-waveless ≈ 60% calmed · Waveless ≈ 80–90% calmed · Ultra/super-waveless ≈ up to 99% calmed · Dual = two separate water cores so each side is independent.
The five motion levels
A modern water mattress controls movement with layers of fiber inside the water chamber. The more fiber, the more the wave is dampened:
- Free-flow (full motion): the original waterbed feel — a noticeable, soothing wave. Fun and immersive, but it moves when your partner moves.
- Semi-waveless: a few fiber layers calm roughly 60% of the motion. Still some gentle movement.
- Waveless: more fiber — about 80–90% of the motion is gone. Feels close to a regular bed with a hint of float.
- Ultra / super-waveless: maximum fiber — up to about 99% of motion removed. You feel supported and still, not rocked.
- Dual chambers (a separate feature you can add to many softside sets): two independent water cores, so each side can have its own motion level and firmness. Ideal for couples who sleep differently.
Which motion is right for you?
- You love the classic waterbed feel → free-flow or semi-waveless.
- You want it to feel like a normal mattress → waveless or ultra-waveless.
- You and your partner are very different (weight, movement, or one of you is a light sleeper) → dual, so neither of you compromises.

FAQ
Does waveless mean no movement at all? No — even ultra-waveless keeps a faint, supportive float. If you want zero movement, you don't want a waterbed; but most people who choose waveless love that little bit of give.
Can I change the motion later? On many softside systems you can swap the water core for a different motion level without buying a whole new bed. Ask us about your specific model.
Is more waveless always better? Not necessarily — more fiber means a firmer, stiller feel. Some people genuinely prefer the lively free-flow wave. It's personal.
