The Best Mattress by Sleep Position

Short answer: How you sleep should decide your firmness. Side sleepers want softer-to-medium (cushion the shoulder and hip). Back sleepers want medium-firm with lumbar support. Stomach sleepers want firmer (keep the hips from sinking). Combination sleepers want a responsive medium that's easy to move on. Get the firmness right for your position and almost any quality mattress type will feel good.

Side → soft–medium · Back → medium-firm · Stomach → firm · Combo → responsive medium. Position matters more than brand.

Side sleepers (the most common)

Your shoulder and hip carry your weight, so you need extra cushioning there or you'll wake with pressure-point soreness and a numb arm. Go soft to medium — a plush hybrid, latex, or memory-foam top contours to your curves while keeping your spine straight. Too firm and your shoulder gets jammed; too soft and your hips drop.

Back sleepers

You want your lower back supported, not bridged. A medium-firm mattress with good lumbar support keeps the natural curve of your spine without letting your hips sink. This is the most forgiving position — most quality medium-firm beds work.

Stomach sleepers

The trickiest for spinal alignment, because the hips sink first and arch the lower back. Go firmer to keep your body on a flat plane. Avoid plush pillowtops here. (If you can, a thin pillow helps too.)

Combination sleepers

If you change positions all night, prioritize a responsive, medium feel that's easy to move on — latex or a responsive hybrid beats deep "stuck-in-it" memory foam. You want quick recovery, not a bed that holds the last shape.

Couples who sleep differently

If one of you is a side sleeper and the other sleeps on their stomach, you don't have to compromise — ask about split comfort (each side its own feel), or an adjustable base with independent head/foot. Our specialists set these up all the time.

FAQ

Does sleep position really matter more than the brand? Yes — the right firmness for your position matters more than the logo. A great mattress in the wrong firmness still sleeps poorly.

I sleep hot and on my side — what now? A medium latex or a cooling/gel hybrid gives side-sleeper cushioning without trapping heat. See Memory Foam vs Hybrid vs Innerspring vs Latex.

What firmness is best for back pain? Usually medium-firm — details in Best Mattress for Back Pain.
